Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the ability to challenge particular calls from the official, following the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
